Artist Talk with Inez Storer
May 20, 2023
1:00pm - 3:00pm at Gallery 16.

Join us for a special conversation with artist and educator Inez Storer and Gallery 16 founder Griff Williams.
Along with discussing Storer's long career as an artist, we will also talk about how she has used her agency to assist others as an educator. Inez and Griff met while he was attending graduate school at the beloved San Francisco Art Institute in the early 1990s. By then Storer had worked as an educator at UC Santa Cruz, San Francisco Art Institute, Sonoma State University, San Francisco State University, and the College of Marin. Her colleagues included other Bay Area luminaries, including Angela Davis, Carlos Villa, Bill Berkson, and Jay DeFeo. Many of Storers students went on to artworld notoriety, including Barry McGee and Kehinde Wiley, whose exhibition An Archaeology of Silence is currently on view at the DeYoung Museum.
Art historical narrative is almost exclusively the purview of object makers and not of educators. The discussions of our day jobs frequently have stigmatizing effects on an artist's career. However, we consider the importance of these contributions to contemporary art, not only for the artist, but society. Mentorship and the collective, cooperative work are necessary for art’s production.

Alice Shaw Art Forum Interview With Glen Helfand
May 09, 2018
"With wry wit and deceptive literalness, Alice Shaw has been making work for over twenty-five years that cleverly focuses on a few core issues: doubles, photography, and the hegemonic history of landscape photography in her native Golden State. Her current exhibition at Gallery 16 in San Francisco, “Cloned,” is on view through May 26, 2018. Here, among other things, she reveals some reasons for her current focus on sheep." - Glen Helfand

Sonny Smith Feature on KQED
February 07, 2018

Nastia Voynovskaya put together an insightful review of Sonny Smith's solo exhibition at Gallery 16, entitled Tour. The author begins the article to note, "To the outside observer, touring as a professional musician is all sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll. But in reality, it’s full of long drives, meals at Waffle House, and the inevitable in-fighting that comes when several humans are trapped in a tight space together for long periods of time."
