ELLIOT ANDERSON at the M.H. de Young Museum of Art
Photo/Synthesis: May 1 - October 3, 2010

Photo/Synthesis highlights the dynamic trend in the field of contemporary photography, collages, assemblages, and other multi-part or composite photo-based projects. Dating from the 1960s to the present, the works in this exhibitions transcend the limitations of traditional photography in which the camera simply captures a unique view or a decisive moment in time. Breaking free of the conventional frame, they are instead the products of various methods of assembling and organizing multiple photographic images into larger aesthetic statements. In each case the sum communicates much more than the component parts.

REX RAY: New Work
September 11 - October 31, 2009 Reception, Friday September 11, 6-9PM

Gallery 16 is pleased to present its sixth solo exhibition with San Francisco luminary Rex Ray. As a fine artist, Rex Ray works in a wide range of media, including painting, collage, print and photography. His dynamic and immediately recognizable collages grew out of the simple pleasure of cutting shapes from magazine pages. His work has grown into an increasingly complex process involving printmaking, painting and collage in an inspired adaptation of twentieth-century Modernism.

Cydney Payton, former director of Denver's MCA, describes Ray’s work: "It exudes beauty with a subversive edge that stems from an attitude grounded in alternative subculture. He was an early admirer of punk and new wave music. Music holds a special place in his life. He has worked with leading contemporary musicians, contributing designs for many album covers and concert posters for artists such as Radiohead, Björk, Nine Inch Nails and David Bowie. Drawing inspiration from his acknowledged influences— organic and hard-edged abstraction, pattern and textile design, and Op Art—Ray playfully combines these formalist concepts, gracefully bridging the gap between fine and applied art..."

REX RAY: "It's finished when I'm done!"
Special Event Thursday, February 12, 6-9PM, 2009

For anyone who has followed Rex Ray's career and has been curious to know how his inspired abstractions are created, come watch him do it!! Rex is preparing for a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, which opens in March. He is currently in the studio finishing the artwork to be presented in the MCA exhibition, including the largest painting of his career, an epic 9' x 25' canvas.

Gallery 16 has always been a place where artwork is not only exhibited, but created; equal parts studio and gallery. In this spirit, we asked Rex to finish the work for the MCA show at Gallery 16. We will host a very special event this Thursday evening, February 12th, from 6-9 pm where guests will be able to enjoy music and cocktails while watching Rex work on the final stages of the new painting. This will be a very unique and fun opportunity to learn more about Rex and his work. A selection of canvases, collage and prints will be available for sale.

Please RSVP to be part of this unique opportunity: vanessa@gallery16.com.

Rex Ray New Work

Gallery 16 is pleased to present its sixth solo exhibition with San Francisco luminary Rex Ray. The exhibition will present new paintings and collages. Ray's work has become a fixture on the national arts scene with its unmistakable graphic power and distinctively barbed beauty.

Visit the exhibition page for more information.

Gallery 16 Editions book:
Cliff Hengst and Scott Hewicker Good Times: Bad Trips

To coincide with their show, Hengst and Hewicker released their book Good Times: Bad Trips. This book is a collection of true accounts exploring an under-recognized rite of passage: The Bad Trip. Pairing individual stories with paintings, collages, and photographs by the artists, the book delves deeply into the romantic pathos of psychedelic crisis. Contributors include over fifty luminaries from the art, music and literary world including Devendra Banhart, Chris Johanson, Lars Bang Larsen, Shaun O'Dell, Keegan McHargue, Kevin Killian, Dodie Bellamy, Leslie Shows, Tony Labat, and Larry Rinder.

Visit the book page for more information.

Past G16 exhibition:
Cliff Hengst and Scott Hewicker S.A.N.E.

This new exhibition with Cliff Hengst and Scott Hewicker is titled S.A.N.E. which stands for Something, Anything, Nothing, Everything. The title provides the artists a loose working method for exploring the ambiguous grasps of consciousness through altered mental states. Taking cues from freak-outs and rituals in Sixties exploitation films, Scott Hewicker will exhibit a suite of new paintings and a new video while Cliff Hengst will use handmade signs and wall drawings to humorously investigate the unbridled super-ego of mental imbalance.

Visit the exhibition page for more information.
